This Beloved Condiment Certainly Has a Rich and Intriguing History!
Most of us have a favorite condiment, sauce, spice or other ingredient that we depend only to liven up and add flavor to just about any dish. Worcestershire sauce, which is made from an intricate and complicated mix of savory ingredients, is definitely one of those. For many people, it's the go-to seasoning for steak, but it has several other uses as well. While the flavor is what attracts many people, the story behind the sauce is equally fascinating.
The original version was a failed attempt to recreate a sauce an English nobleman had sampled while in India in the early 1800s. He enlisted two chemists, John Lea and William Perrins. The resulting concoction was so disgusting they simply tossed it in the cellar, but years later, while cleaning out the area, they found it and decided to give it another taste. After maturing, it now tasted delicious, so they put it on the market and are still selling the same version nearly 200 years later.
The specific formulation is a closely guarded secret, and the company doesn't disclose the top-secret mix of spices it uses, but “How It's Made,” a show on The Science Channel, does have a video featuring an inside look at the manufacturing process.

Yep…if people knew how it was discovered and now made they probably would never use it again…pretty funky stuff… but it does taste good on and in many things.
Back in the 60’s a friend sprinkled it on pizza. I thought he was crazy…. but then I tried it….
