This Dish Is A Staple In The United Kingdom & One Of Our Favorite Comfort Foods!

Here's everything you need for this stick-to-your-ribs Shepherd's pie. For extra flavor, add some cooked barley to the beef.

Let's Get Started…

Ingredients To Gather:

  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped onion
  • 1/4 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 5 carrots, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 3/4 cup beef broth
  • 1/4 cup shredded Cheddar cheese

Directions To Follow:

Start by boiling a large pot of salted water, and then adding the potatoes and cooking them until still firm but just a little tender. This usually takes about 15 minutes. When the potatoes are done, drain them and then mash. Add the onion, butter and Cheddar cheese, and then season to taste with salt and pepper. Next, bring another large pot of salted water to boil and then add carrots. Like the potatoes, cook the carrots until they're still firm but also a little tender. This should take about 15 minutes. When they're done, drain and mash them just as you did with the potatoes.

Now, preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit, and then heat oil in a large frying pan. Add the onion to the pan and cook until the onion is clear. After this, add the beef and cook until it's browned. Then, pour the excess fat off the meat and add the flour and cook for 1 minute. Add the ketchup and beef broth, bring the mixture to a boil, and then reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes. Next, place the beef in a layer at the bottom of a 2-quart casserole dish, followed by a layer of mashed carrots and a layer of mashed potatoes. Sprinkle with Cheddar cheese and then cook until golden brown. This usually takes about 20 minutes.

Finished!

This recipe takes just 50 minutes total time, which makes it perfect for everything from lunch to dinner. Or maybe just a hearty snack. You can have it by itself, but we like it with some hot buttered cornbread or toast.

Enjoy!

That’s not technically a shepherds pie. Its a cottage pie. If it has beef, cottage pie, if it has lamb or mutton, shepherds pie.
